Why comfort shouldn't be gendered

Why comfort shouldn't be gendered

Why is comfort so often treated as a luxury in women’s clothing?

Think about your favourite pair of sweatpants. The ones you put on when you get home. The ones you could spend an entire Sunday in. Now think about your underwear.

Why should these two feelings be so different?

At yris, we believe comfort shouldn't be something you have to give up because you're wearing something designed for women.

Comfort has always been complicated

Women's clothing has a long history of balancing appearance, social expectations and practicality.

Corsets are probably the most famous example. In the 19th century, they helped create the fashionable silhouette of the time, while dress reformers and women's rights advocates questioned whether women's clothing should prioritise appearance over health and freedom of movement. And while we've come a long way since then, the conversation around comfort isn't over.

Research has found that women are more likely than men to wear clothing that is uncomfortable, painful or distracting – often because of expectations around appearance.

Even the little things matter

Take pockets. Men's clothing has historically offered practical, integrated pockets, while women's clothing often prioritised silhouette over function. The result? Tiny pockets, fake pockets or no pockets at all. It might seem like a small detail, but it raises a bigger question:

Who are our clothes actually designed for?

The same applies to fit. Women's bodies come in countless shapes and proportions, yet clothing is often based on standardised measurements that don't represent everyone. Poor fit can turn something as simple as getting dressed into a constant need to adjust, pull, fix and readjust.

And when it comes to underwear, comfort becomes even more important. It sits directly against your skin and moves with you all day.

Comfort isn't the opposite of femininity

We don't think women need to stop caring about fashion. You can love heels, dresses and lingerie. You can also love oversized shirts, sneakers and a pair of boxers.

Feminism isn't about telling women what to wear. It's about having the freedom to choose.

If something makes you feel confident, wear it.
If something makes you feel comfortable, wear it. And if you want both?
Even better.

So, why women's boxers?

That's where yris started.

We've always loved the feeling of a good pair of boxers: soft, relaxed, uncomplicated and easy to move in.

So we asked ourselves:

Why shouldn't women have that feeling too?

Not a men's boxer simply made smaller. But a boxer designed specifically for women, with the fit and details that make sense for us. Because comfort doesn't belong to one gender.

Maybe it's time we stopped asking women to compromise.

Wear what makes you feel good.
Move in it.
Live in it.

Comfort is for everyone.
